Pomp and personalization!

Hanging_monograms

Nothing makes an event memorable like personalized details.
Make these hanging monograms to go on doors (entrance to a church or doors to your reception), or
maybe welcome guests to a baby shower.  Use it to hang above a food table or even hang on the front of a food table at a party or shower.

Super easy to make.  Just use live or silk flowers, a glue gun, satin ribbon and corsage pins.

Not crafty?  No time?
Buy one here.  Lots of color options available!

Why didn't I think of that?

Brilliant_2In the "why didn't I think of that" category...
Hallmark recently came out with adhesive backed wrapping paper!

Brilliant!

How many times have you gone hunting for tape?
Yeah. Me too.

Apparently, the wrapping paper has just enough of a tacky adhesive to stick to the package, but not damage it.  It can also be repositioned if you have a bubble or it's crooked, etc.

Looks easy enough.  Check out this Hallmark page and watch the demo.

Give the gift of creativity!

Child_gift

Are you sick of going to the local Target and buying the latest and greatest commercialized toy for that next birthday party?  Want to give something fun and different and at the same time provide an activity that sparks imagination?

Family Circle magazine recently included this idea which I think is brilliant!  Give a child the gift of a fun activity!  Find instructions for a great creative activity.  Great ones can be found at www.familyfun.com or the kid's section of Martha Stewart's website.  Print off the directions, purchase all the needed supplies and create a craft box!   You could even include a list of multiple ideas.

Moms will think they are great for rainy days or days when their child is whining they have nothing to do!

Also, on a smaller scale, these would make great favors at a birthday party.  Instead of the usual trinkets and candy, send guests home with an activity for a later time.  Tie the activity into the theme of the party, even.

Wanna spruce it up?  Find a fun container.  Put the supplies in an empty paint can and make a cute label for the outside.  Paint cans can be bought at your local hardware store. Or paint a large plastic ice cream tub (the kind with the handle). Just make sure the fun container has a lid to keep everything together and in it's place.

How to make . . .

Diaper

I've made many diaper cakes and every time, I'm asked how to
make one.  It's super easy and makes such a great, practical gift
as well as added decor for the shower.  Call the shower hostess
and ask about the theme and color scheme and tie yours in
with the feel of the shower.

Here's how to put it together:

1.  You'll need one one package of diapers.  I usually use size 2 or 3.  New moms will get a lot of
packages of newborn diapers, but not many in larger sizes.  It's nice to have some larger sizes already
at your house when the time comes when they need them.  Of course, if you want a larger diaper cake, buy more diapers.

2. Cut a  piece of cardboard  in either a circular shape or square.  (I've used a square base before with a circular cake only  because I had planned on using the "cake" as part of the decoration by sitting it on a cake pedestal which was square.)

3.  Cover your cardboard in a nice fabric or wrapping paper in the colors of the shower.

4.  Take an  empty paper towel cardboard roll and stand it up in the center of your cardboard base.  Tape the roll to the base.  This will serve as your anchor for the cake.  You can just use scotch tape to take it down and it doesn't matter if the tape shows. Your diapers will cover it.

5.  Next, roll up individual diapers.  You'll want to roll the diapers in the direction they already curve.  Don't go against the curve of the diaper.  Usually the waist of the diaper has some type of graphic (cartoon character, etc.)  I try to roll mine so that those don't show.  More times than not, the diapers won't be all be rolled with the same tightness and the showing graphic won't match on them all. Very distracting to the design.

6.  When you roll the diapers, tie each diaper up with ribbon. I use very narrow satin ribbon.  It's usually around 50 cents a roll or cheaper at Walmart.  Tie them as tight as you can and make sure the ribbon is in the middle of the diaper.

7.  Next, time to build the cake. Start at the bottom and surround the paper towel roll with rolled diapers. Then go around again.  Filling in empty spots.  You should do 3 rows of diapers. Or less if your rolled diapers are bigger.

8.  After you're finished with that layer, take a piece of wide ribbon and tie around the whole base (as in the photos above).  You want to make sure you cover the individual ribbons you've used to tie each diaper.  The wide ribbon is both decorative, but also hides how the individual diapers are kept tight and brings the base together and makes it solid.  Tie the wide ribbon tightly.

9.  Move on to the middle layer and continue the process. You should do two rows of diapers to make a graduated cake.  Finish that layer with a wide ribbon.

10.  For the top layer you should have one row of diapers.  Sometimes you just have to play it by sight and see what is proportionate with the size of diapers you're using. Finish this layer off with a wide ribbon as well.  I almost always tie a stuffed animal to the top of the cake and it's attached to the top layer.  I run the wide ribbon around the animal and tie the ribbon in the front like the other layers.

Voila!  Diaper cake!
Easy to make.. extremely practical and always impresses the guests!

Planning for the 4th

Shells

I've seen these in a few different places and thought they were an interesting and cute
idea that's worth mentioning.

These are stringed party lights made from just regular ole christmas lights covered
in shotgun hulls!  SHOTGUN HULLS!  LOL

I love the bottom strand.  These were multi-colored xmas lights covered with white shotgun
hulls.  Super cute for a children's party or disco theme or anything where you're looking
for a multitude of bright, fun colors.

Can't make them yourself?   Buy them here.  Lots of color combos available.

How to make . . .

Triple_2

a super cute personalized card!
Another great idea from Good Housekeeping.  (I gotta say GH is surprising me lately with fun ideas like these.)

Just spell out your message on a REAL scrabble game board.  You can put in the recipient's name or if it doesn't fit or you just want to do several cards at once, make a general "happy birthday" card.

Take a snapshot of the board and print it out where you usually take your photos (Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, etc.).  Tape the photo onto a blank folded notecard.   Maybe find an envelope in a shade that matches at color on your scrabble board for an extra pop of color.  And you're done!
